Solving Low Water Pressure in Athlone and the Midlands

Low water pressure is a frustrating problem that affects many homes across Athlone and the Midlands, particularly older properties with gravity-fed plumbing systems. If your shower barely trickles, your taps take an age to fill the bath, or your combi boiler struggles to deliver adequate flow, a booster pump may be the solution you need.

We supply, install, and maintain shower pumps and whole-house booster pumps from leading manufacturers including Stuart Turner and Grundfos. Every installation is tailored to your specific water system, ensuring you get the right pump for the job and the best possible performance improvement.

Understanding Water Pressure

Water pressure is measured in bar. Mains water pressure in Ireland typically ranges from 1.0 to 3.0 bar, but many properties - especially those in rural areas or at the end of long supply runs - receive significantly less. A gravity-fed system, where cold water is stored in an attic tank and relies on the height difference (head) to create pressure, typically delivers between 0.1 and 0.3 bar, which is insufficient for many modern shower heads and mixer valves.

We begin every consultation with a pressure test at multiple points in the system. This tells us exactly what pressure you are starting with and helps us recommend the right pump solution. Our article on common causes of low water pressure and how to fix them covers many of the issues we encounter. There is no point installing a high-powered pump if the underlying issue is a partially closed valve or a blocked supply pipe, so we always diagnose before we prescribe.

Shower Pump Installation

Positive Head Pumps

A positive head pump is designed for gravity-fed systems where the pump is installed below the level of the cold water tank. The water flows down to the pump under gravity, and the pump boosts it onwards to the shower. This is the most common type of shower pump installation in Irish homes with attic tanks.

Stuart Turner positive head pumps - such as the Monsoon range - are our most frequently installed units. They offer quiet operation, reliable performance, and a range of power outputs from 1.5 bar to 4.0 bar depending on your requirements. We install the pump in the airing cupboard or hot press, connect it to both the hot and cold supply pipes, and run the boosted feeds to your shower.

Negative Head Pumps

A negative head pump is required when the pump is installed at the same level as, or above, the cold water tank - for example, in a loft conversion where the shower is on the same floor as the attic tank. Unlike a positive head pump, a negative head pump can draw water upwards to the pump before boosting it to the outlet.

Stuart Turner and Grundfos both produce reliable negative head pumps. Installation is more complex than a positive head pump because the pump must be positioned carefully to avoid air locks, and anti-vibration mounts are essential to prevent noise transmission through the building structure.

Twin-Impeller vs Single-Impeller

A twin-impeller (or twin-ended) pump boosts both hot and cold water simultaneously, ensuring balanced pressure at the shower mixer. This is the standard choice for most shower installations. A single-impeller pump boosts only one supply - hot or cold - and is used in specific situations such as boosting a cold mains supply to a combination boiler.

We always recommend a twin-impeller pump for shower installations to ensure even, consistent temperature control. A pressure imbalance between hot and cold can cause thermostatic mixer valves to fluctuate or shut off entirely.

Whole-House Booster Pumps

When a Whole-House Pump Makes Sense

If low pressure affects your entire property - not just the shower - a whole-house booster pump may be the better solution. These larger units are installed on the mains supply as it enters the property and boost pressure to all outlets simultaneously. Grundfos booster pumps are our preferred choice for whole-house installations due to their quiet operation, energy efficiency, and long service life.

A whole-house booster pump is particularly beneficial for properties that experience low mains pressure during peak demand periods (mornings and evenings), homes with combination boilers that require a minimum flow rate to fire, and larger properties where the distance from the mains supply to the furthest outlet results in significant pressure loss.

Mains Pressure Considerations

Before installing a mains booster pump, we check that your incoming mains pressure and flow rate can support the pump. Irish Water regulations require that booster pumps do not reduce pressure or flow to neighbouring properties. We ensure that every installation complies with these regulations and that the pump is fitted with the appropriate check valves and pressure switches.

Pump Replacement and Maintenance

Shower pumps and booster pumps are mechanical devices with a finite lifespan. Common signs that a pump needs attention include reduced water pressure (worn impellers), noisy operation (bearing wear), cycling on and off (pressure switch fault), or failure to start (electrical or capacitor failure).

We replace pumps from all manufacturers and can usually complete a like-for-like swap in a couple of hours. Where a pump has failed prematurely, we investigate the cause - such as running dry due to a supply issue or overheating due to poor ventilation - to prevent the same problem recurring with the new unit.
